Nepal Cuts Upper Mustang Trekking Fee to $50 Per Day

Nepal has revolutionized access to Upper Mustang by eliminating the longstanding $500 flat fee and introducing a flexible $50 per person per day permit structure. Announced in November 2025, this historic policy change makes the “Forbidden Kingdom” significantly more affordable for budget-conscious trekkers and those planning shorter visits.

Understanding the New Fee Structure

The old system required a mandatory $500 payment covering ten days, regardless of actual time spent in the region. Under the new regulations, trekkers pay only $50 per day with no minimum stay requirement. A three-day visit now costs just $150 instead of $500, saving $350. A five-day trek costs $250 compared to the previous $500, while a seven-day journey runs $350 versus $500. The ten-day trek remains at $500.

Why This Changes Everything for Trekkers

Of approximately 150,000 annual visitors to Mustang, only three to four percent previously ventured into Upper Mustang due to high fees. The new structure makes weekend extensions from the Annapurna Circuit suddenly affordable. Tourism contributed Rs327.9 billion to Nepal’s economy in 2023, and increased Upper Mustang accessibility will significantly benefit local communities dependent on trekking revenue.

Application Requirements

Trekkers still need a valid passport, Nepal tourist visa, and must travel in groups of at least two people with a government-registered agency and licensed guide. Permits require the Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit at approximately $23. Applications are processed in Kathmandu or Pokhara within one to three business days.

Best Time to Visit

Spring from March to May offers pleasant temperatures and the famous Tiji Festival. Autumn from September to November provides crystal-clear visibility. Uniquely, Upper Mustang remains accessible during monsoon season when other Nepal treks are rain-soaked, offering fewer crowds and authentic experiences.
