The Makalu Base Camp Trek leads into one of Nepal’s most remote and untouched regions. Due to its isolated location in eastern Nepal, reaching the starting point requires a combination of air and road travel. Unlike other popular trekking areas, access to Makalu is limited, making the journey part of the adventure itself.
The road journey to Makalu region is long and exhausting. Drive from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar on the BP Highway is around 500 km. The journey by car takes about 12-14 hours subject to road conditions. A 4–5-hour jeep journey on hill roads and through remote villages from Tumlingtar takes us to Chichila (1,980m), the trekking point. Roads are generally bad and weather-sensitive, especially during the monsoon, so private 4WD vehicles are ideal.
The easiest and most convenient way to reach the trek is by flying for 35 minutes from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (410m). Flights are regular, though delays are not rare due to weather. From Tumlingtar, a 4–5-hour drive to Chichila, the trek starting point, is necessary. The flight is time-saving and avoids the long overland journey. The trekkers must always expect possible disruption of flights and include extra days in the itinerary to accommodate the delayed arrival and departure.
Embark on the Makalu Base Camp Trek with Himalayan Explore Line and uncover the untouched beauty of Nepal’s eastern Himalayas. This trek promises an extraordinary experience filled with adventure, cultural exploration, and natural splendor. Let us guide you through an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Himalayas!
To take the Makalu Base Camp Trek is a journey into one of Nepal’s most remote regions. Trekkers must be prepared for basic amenities and limited facilities en route. The following is an overview of what to expect:
For the trek, accommodations are largely teahouses and lodges. These establishments provide basic facilities, typically with twin- or triple-bedded rooms and shared bathroom facilities. The accommodation is simple but a decent place to rest and replenish supplies before the next trek. The diet is simple but wholesome, consisting generally of traditional Nepali fare such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), noodles, soups, and bread. Even if one is further from civilization, not much variety may be available, yet food is still healthy and suitable for trekking.
Electricity is scarce on the Makalu Base Camp Trek. A few teahouses and lodges can provide solar electricity, which trekkers can use to charge their electronic gadgets for a small fee. However, power sources are not reliable, particularly at high altitudes. It is best to bring a high-capacity power bank to keep your devices charged during the trek.
Mobile network is available in some of the larger villages and lower segments of the trek. But the higher you ascend in altitude; the networks are not available or limited. Satellite phones can be rented from a few trekking agencies or lodges, primarily for use in areas where there is no mobile coverage.
There are few medical centers on the Makalu Base Camp Trek. In case of emergencies, there are no easily accessible medical centers due to the far-off nature of the area. Trekkers need to carry a full-fledged first-aid kit along with some basic medicines and treatments for normal diseases and acute mountain sickness. Having comprehensive travel insurance that includes high-altitude trekking and evacuation in an emergency is also a must.
Toilet facilities along the trek are limited and vary depending on the teahouse or lodge. You may have Western toilets in lower elevations, but at higher altitudes, you ought to have squat toilets or simple pit latrines. Some teahouses also offer hot showers at a little extra fee, but as you ascend, the less it is available. Personal hygiene items such as toilet paper and hand sanitizer should be carried by trekkers because they are not typically provided.
There are no banks, ATMs, or currency exchange facilities on the Makalu Base Camp Trek. Everything to pay for meals, accommodation, permits, and unforeseen expenses has to be carried in Nepalese Rupees in cash, and all by the end of the journey. Credit and debit cards do not usually work in the villages along the way. Plan your budget well in advance and hide your money by dividing it amongst multiple safe locations in your gear.
Through an understanding and preparation for these conditions, trekking lovers can be capable of experiencing the rugged landscape and cultural variety that the Makalu Base Camp Trek has to offer.
